Fun fun fun

When you don’t ride public transit you miss out on the joy that is humanity. In the last few weeks, I have run into many interesting characters such as:

1) The person reading Sweet Valley High #64. I was intrigued, mostly because I didn’t know that girls were into those books anymore. And it turned out I was right-it was a guy reading it. And not a pre-teen either. I’d peg him at about 18.

2) The pretty lady across from me with a black eye and yellow fingers. I was very careful not to make eye contact.

3) The drunk elderly gentleman laying on a bench on the subway platform genially shouting “Let’s just say I’m the cutest man you’ll ever meet!”

And people wonder why I have never learned how to drive.

We went out to St.Catharines to visit my mother today, as my dad is in England on vacation and she’s very lonely. Plus the Easter bunny had made a pitstop at her house with underwear for all of us. We also went to the Butterfly Conservatory in Niagara Falls, and Shannon and Ari went on the trip behind the falls. They said it was loud, wet and cold, but fun.

Acting

Like in Vanity Fair magazine…

“You’re the lead guitarist for Biohazard and just found out there’s no beer backstage.”

Puzzling

Anyone that knows me is aware of my love of crossword puzzles. I started doing them in college to get through the monotony of between-class-time and to appear busy so that the actors wouldn’t bug me with their constant whining. It didn’t stop them, but I did get better and better at them and if I go through a Sunday without doing the crossword in the Toronto Star(which is the perfect difficulty), I feel sick to my stomach.

Until recently. Now I am hooked on Sudoku. I pretty much suck at it, but I think I am slowly beginning to get the hang of it. I finished today’s Sudoku in record time, and according to the side bar, I am a genius.

Oh yeah. Bring it on Einstein.

The best part of Disney Princesses on Ice was the throngs of little girls dressed in their favourite princess’ dress. I mean, hundreds of 3-5 year olds in ball gowns and tiaras with sparkling wands and $12 cups with rainbow ice in them. And one little boy who had a tutu and a floral tiara on. He was a little younger than his sister and at first I thought he was her short haired ugly sister. Then I realized…Well, I wanted to take a picture but his parents were being such good sports, I didn’t want to upset them.

The other best part was racing down to the rinkside to slap hands with all the princesses. Ari got all of them except “the one I don’t like”. Good job.

Spring has (almost) sprung.

I read in the paper that winter is going to last another 6 weeks, and if that’s true, there could well be snow on my birthday. Which, if you were curious, happens each year with remarkable regularity on May 11th. An easy way to remember it this year is that it coincides with Mother’s Day. Lucky me.

Try telling that to these sweet little bulbs peeking out of the earth.

I love springtime for so many reasons, but I hate all the cigarette butts and dog shit that melting snow exposes. Ugh. People, clean up after yourselves.

And because I don’t think I fully raved on about my best soup ever over yonder, here it is in it’s full glory. I mean it, this borscht was my Waterloo.

Borscht

Gorgeous, huh? Sorry Ali, but you are WAY wrong on beets. Now I am thinking of my favourite foods and which ones I would eat each week if I wanted. Mmm.

Play

We’ve been busy playing with Playmobil toys lately. I had a few when I was a kid, but I tended to beg for Lego’s more. There’s quite a great collection here now, and we’ve been spending lots of time with it. I narrate crazy stories about princesses and princes and elves and kings that die and come back to life as handsome princes that have love in their hearts. I only get to play the boy characters or the ones that do not have crowns and ball gowns. all the king’s men

Also, a special painting was made just for me.

Pink painting

It’s a little abstract, but it’s a heart with arms and a face, green grass, sky…beautiful.

It was hardly work, being paid to attend a birthday party. Total. Blast. And yes, it’s cheese cake with Oreo crust,  caramel goo on top and brownie wedges all around. Calories? Pfft!

Busy, busy Saturday

Normally I try to do very little on the weekend. I prefer to lump around and MAYBE cook a meal. Well, today didn’t work out quite that way.

First, we went to Dollarama and bought all kinds of treats. Ari and I made Shrinky Dinks. Remember them? They shrink? The set we shared was fruits and vegetables, and it came with beads and string, so we made rings and bracelets.

Then I customized a shirt for Ari. She will look totally toughballs in the summer.

After that, we made cupcakes. Lemon cake with red food colouring in it so they are orange, vanilla icing coloured green and pink and a mazzillion sprinkles. We ate loads of them and brought a wack load to Saira and Michael, who are busy renovating and haven’t got any food.

After all that, we played quietly on the floor. The T Rex chomped a giraffe and her zebra daughter, then went to Hawaii to rest.

And Shannon worked on finishing his painting.

ps, I also made broccoli soup for lunch, from scratch, and had a nap. And we visited Saira to deliver cupcakes and ate dinner. Pooped much?

What almost-5-year-olds think about

Em donated a bunch of preemie clothing to a pile of naked toys that were laying about the house. Thank goodness for that, as they were getting cold.
