See, it's not really that great a joke, I guess you'd have to have seen him live to really appreciate it, which was why I added the cheap shot (Richard Simmons) at the end. And when viewing youtube concert footage, he's mostly wearing longer shorts, but trust me, I have seen him live lots of times, and he used to wear those tiny nylon runner shorts.
