Happy customer

Posted by – 17/01/2009

I hadn’t sold something in a long time and I had forgotten how happy it makes me. Here’s Gaz who bought the brown dickey I made mostly while flying to Mexico. He says “I knew it would be warm and comfy, but not THAT much. Its awesome :)”

Well, kind words always make me feel good! You’re welcome!

gaz is warm

Everyone loves a good shit story, right?

Posted by – 16/01/2009

It’s true. I have a story about shit that happened the other day, but seeing as a)I survived b)did NOT poop my pants, there isn’t much to tell.

Anyway, have I mentioned lately that I like to crochet? Ah, it’s winter, I can hardly help myself. I can talk about that or I can talk about going to the gym (300 calories in 30 minutes on the elliptical, 5 hard minutes on the rowing machine and 10 minutes on the floor creating new stretching moves with a giant exercise ball) but that’s boring. Once I start getting noticeably fitter, then I will post pictures.

I made an owl. I completely ripped it off of Beth’s design. I bought her book and trust me, I love it, but I was sorely disappointed that the owls weren’t in it.  Her designs are so incredible, so rich with detail it makes me crazy jealous. Anyway, my owl is no where near how nice hers are-and I am not thrilled with the green edging nor can I figure out how to clamp those new safety eyes on-but it’s still pretty cute. Now I know what I did wrong and can do another. Luckily I have buckets, literally, BUCKETS of yarn to play with.

hoot hoot, don’t pollute

Well, I also made a teeny tiny Muno. He’s not done yet-he still needs arms-so no picture until he’s done!

Embroidery

Posted by – 13/01/2009

Here are some samples of embroidery I did some time around 2002, I think, but maybe earlier.

I was going to make an entire Simpsons themed quilt, but using the lesser known characters that carry the episodes. The only three I made (and one isn’t finished) are Sherri and Terri, Wendell and Uter. I had plans for lots of others, notably baby Gerald, old Gil, Lisa’s frenemy Janey, Mrs. Glick, Snowball I and II, Brad “do what you feel like” Goodman and Hank Scorpion. Well, like so many of my projects, I quit halfway through Uter. Ah, well. One day.

Sherri AND Terri

Wendell is often sick.

Unfinished Uter.

I get the Toronto Star on Sunday every week just to do the crossword. It’s a good because it’s hard but not impossible. Most weeks I fill in about two thirds of the clues and feel pretty good about it. This week I finished the ENTIRE crossword! In one day, heck, in less than 12 hours! To commemorate this day of days, I am posting visual evidence:

Done!

I know, my writing is very messy. That’s intentional mainly because I hate when someone reads my crossword over my shoulder and offers their help AND it’s adapted because I use marker type pens that are sort of juicy so the fewer pen strokes the better.

Workin’ out

Posted by – 12/01/2009

My boss and I have agreed to go to the gym 3 days a week. She works at a community centre, so we get to go for free during off hours (when the weight room is closed). It’s great and way less embarrassing  than with an audience (although I think some people prefer it that way). Not me.  The first time we went, I did the elliptical machine for half an hour and I thought I was going to die. I actually had to sit down for  5 minutes before I felt like my legs would hold me up.   Then last week I  did  it again, half an hour, and burned only 200 calories. What  a rip, eh?  At least I could walk after that time.

Today, same work out (half hour on the elliptical) and I burned 280 calories! Sweet, eh? Not only that, but I did some free weights after AND 10 minutes on the rowing machine! Ha ha! It was great, I practically skipped home after.

This is me, I have never, EVER worked out in my entire life. Sure, in middle school I did track and gymnastics, I took one gym class in high school (grade 10) and did gymnastics until grade 12, then I used to go dancing twice a week in my early 20′s (the hard livin’ years, booze and dancing, it was fun!) but haven’t…well, let’s say that when I turned 30 (6 years ago, mind you) things started sliding down hill. I didn’t care, and I still don’t care, but it turns out I like going to the gym. Who, in a million years, woulda thunk?

I even bought workout pants. Thanks, Megan!

Flying high again.

Late night

On Sunday night there aren’t many people on the subway.

Delayed Xmas

Posted by – 12/01/2009

I spent Sunday afternoon at my mom’s house. Because we were away for the holidays, January 10th was the agreed upon date. Due to unforeseen illness, I wound up traveling alone on the bus. My mom not only has great friends, she’s a great chef, and it was a fun day.

The cake:

Mmm, but no custard!

My family, after a couple glasses of wine (hence the red cheeks):

Family

I got lots of great gifts-I can hardly wait to go to Romni and spend the gift certificate. And the cash? It’s either going to be spent on gym shoes (I don’t have proper indoor runners) or on girl’s night out. Somehow I suspect that my sister would approve more heartily of the latter.

Oh, and the joke. One of the guests is a math professor who told the following joke (that I suspect will only be appreciated by Richard Larratt):

Q-What is purple, commutes and is worshiped by many?

A-A finitely venerated abelian grape!

Ha ha, right?

Goose X-ing

Posted by – 07/01/2009

Yesterday on my walk to the subway I saw an enormous flock of geese who seemed to be taking a break from their migration route. Conservatively, I would guess at least 200 of them. I am not a huge fan of geese (they would take over the pond at my grandparent’s cottage every year and destroy it with their poop), but seeing so many of them at once and all the traffic at a dead stand still while they slowly saunter across the street, well, I had to dig my camera out and take a couple pictures. The fourth picture is especially great, 2 rows of geese with all the cars stopped!

Geese1 geese2 geese3

geese4 geese5 Not geese

I know, the last picture is not of geese, but any regular reader of my blog knows how I feel about pigeons (ie, love them). These 2 were just pecking around in the snow minding their own business, trying not to associate with the geese who were taking over their world.

Oh. I made a hat for Ari-I think she’s only worn it once-but I thought I would post a picture because it came out pretty good, and it looks SUPER cute on her head. It’s made of soy yarn so it’s very soft. It’s not thick and warm, but some winter hats don’t want to be too warm, otherwise you end up with a sweaty head and take off your hat and then freeze to death. See? I have lots of theories on hats.

Meow.

For Sale

Our vacation was about relaxation (amongst other things) and I brought crochet hooks and yarn with me to work on some projects. Believe it or not, that IS relaxing for me. Mindless repetition, ya know? So now I have a few things to off load:

3 Dickeys (and another is a work in progress). The first one is brown alpaca blend yarn with self-striping sock yarn (I think it’s wool but I lost the tag). It’s about 8″ wide and 25″ around. It’s VERY cozy. The second is pink alpaca blend yarn with cotton self striping (that goes pink, orange, purple) yarn, 9″ wide and 22″ around. The third is made of cream coloured soy yarn mixed with self-striping wool sock yarn that is beige and mustard. 7″ wide and 25 around. It’s lighter than the other two, but it’s very soft and pretty. I have put mother of pearl buttons on it instead of sewing it closed. I will post a more current version of it when I have a moment.

Brown Pink Cream

I also have my 2 very manly sock scarves that are looking for good homes. Much like the rabbits (and elephant) I am not asking for a ton of money, mostly just to cover costs AND shipping.

Make me an offer I can’t refuse!

Ps, sock scarves. I don’t know how long/wide they are but they’re like…regular scarves. Around your neck twice and tied in the front like normal scarves.
