Something, something, I suppose.

I asked for a suprise last week while Shannon was out birthday shopping, and he brought me home a new game for my DS. He picked Rhythm Heaven. I love it, it’s so silly and funny. And hard for my small brain. I play it a lot and the songs are in my head all the time and I even set one as my ringtone.

As you can see, on the first screen I am good at all the games except ping pong and robot building. Beyonce is also a crap robot builder, so I feel less bad.

fun

I also like the endless games on the medals page, the one I took a picture of is the banging a cowbell in time while someone is driving a car. Because, like, I do that all the time on long car drives*.

bong bong bong

She looks pretty happy, surprisingly. She only makes a face when you are no longer in time.

* Not.

Pickles!

Since Ashley’s been blogging about making cheese, I got all jealous and wanted to be more productive too, so I am back on pickling mode. I made some pickled beets the other day, but they aren’t that great, I think the cider vinegar I used was a cheap one and watered down. They still taste nice, just not very pickly.

beets

You can tell that someone’s been eating them.

So I decided to make pickled turnips, like the kind you get on your falafel. They are pink, crunchy and kind of spicy. I had a hard time finding a recipe that even vaguely sounded right, but I chose this one and I am hoping for the best (they take a week to pickle, I won’t know ’til next Friday).

turnips?

Oooh, I am so excited about these, my hopes are sky high.

Work.

Today, at work, I did a double work out. Let me explain:

Normally I do a 20 minute bike ride-it’s a recumbent type bike-and I average 4.5 miles and burn about 400+ calories. So I did that today, but I was done with 35 minutes left to go on my shift, so I thought, what the hey, do another 20 minutes, so I cranked the difficulty down one notch and pedaled at 130 rpm instead of 145, read a magazine and…the grand total? 8.5 miles and 778 calories burned. Yes, I was very sweaty after. But I was neither tired nor sore. If I can do that 3 times a week I will be skinny before my birthday-May 11. Haha, just kidding.

Then I met Ari at school and we walked home, another 2.2km. Plus I am back onto wii fit. Now I am relaxing with a bottle  glass of wine.

I know I’ve said it before, but I am amazed by how much I enjoy the gym. And gym clothes.

Yet another perk

Who would ever have thought I’d enjoy living with fish so much? Not me, that’s for sure. Yet somehow, here I am, loving fish. There are three of them, 2 koi fish and one black slurper (identified by Ashley as a plecostamus) at the bottom of the pond. I walk past them 100 times each day, and every time I wave and say “hi fish!” just to keep things friendly. For real, if I could take them out of the water and kiss them, I would do it. Maybe. Today I decided to name them, the blonds are Kelly and Donna and the brunette is Brenda. Obviously.

fishy wishy

The fish were crazy shy at first, ducking under the plant’s leaves to hide from us, but now they’ve chilled out and splash around all the time.

The plant behind them is named Elephant Junior, after it’s parent plant, Elephant.

Illegal skipping

Ari and I went to the playground next door to check things out. Luckily the kid police didn’t come and bust us, hauling our butts to jail. We found a skipping rope that was artfully tied to various things by Ari and skipped with.

It’s almost like summer today. I’m going to break out the spf 30 later.

Felicitations!

Today was Ari’s 6th birthday. I think it was probably her most eagerly anticipated birthday yet, and has been talked about for almost a year. The day went very well, Ari helped me bake and decorate her own cake this morning:

cake nom nom

Served on my grandmother’s wedding china, yes. I am no cake decorator, that’s for certain. I am also aware that it reads Happy Ari Birthday, but when I made the letters and she was watching, it all made sense. And no, it’s no Barbie cake, nor does it have pink frosting (we haven’t moved a few key things including the food colouring) but it tasted good and that’s the main point. Ari got to make 2 wishes, one when she blew out the candle and one when she made the first cut.

Lots of presents too, including a Razor scooter (decorated with Princess stickers), Little Pet Shop stuff, her first Pez dispenser,Converse runners, a tea set from Oma and a whoopie cushion from my mom. The shoes are too big but she’s still growing-better than too small, right?

gifts

If you’re wondering: No, we haven’t finished unpacking yet. But we’re getting there. It looks more like a home every day, and that’s good.

Foundlings

If the word on the street is that I am a total pack rat, word has it right. I really am. And the last year and a half I’ve been living without my stuff, my glorious, wonderful, life affirming stuff. Now we have room and I have all my stuff back and the joy I’ve experienced over the last couple days, opening boxes, finding treasures, it’s been tremendous.

Here’s a little something:

buttons! and zippers!

Little, eh? They are teeny tiny (see? goes with my love of all things wee) buttons and zippers, destined for hand made Barbie clothes. I don’t know when they were made, but they look old to me, like, real old.  The buttons themselves are so small, miniscule, maybe the size of a Barbie’s eyes. A while ago I’d been looking for them for some crafty purpose and now I can’t remember what, but I’m glad I have them. Super glad!

Work meeting

We have a meeting for work every 6 weeks or so, and tonight’s went really well. Probably due to the great agenda that was written:

agenda

See the fifth suggestion?

Trust me, a group hug at a work meeting helps bring staff together and makes everyone happy.  And we did all put on happy faces after that, it didn’t need to be on the agenda!

Old news

I found the disk with my old pictures on it (from 2002 perhaps?) and wanted to share with you. I’m pretty sure I’ve posted these pictures before, so bear with me, ok?

Mostly for my mom and sister:

tubby

I still have one of those kilts. I tried to get Ari to wear it but she said it wasn’t really her ’style’.

dad

That’s my dad+beard-moustache. And our dog Spike.

me

Shannon took this in 2000, probably. I love the mountain of garbage behind the couch. And I think I may be wearing white longjohns under a grey cord skirt (made from grey cord pants). This picture reminds me that it’s probably time for a hair cut.

pink

Youch. The scabs, the yellow bruises, holy. Scott McEwan may be heavy handed, but I’ve never needed one speck of touch ups and it’s worth it.

Beautiful Sunday

I just got back from the briefest visit ever from Nicole. Please feel free to go to her shop and buy lots of stuff. She had a necklace for me that is so incredible, every detail of it is amazing, thanks Cole. I just need to figure out how it’s worn to show off all the lampwork beads.

On my way back upstairs (to the mess, mid move is hell) I dashed out back to the variety store and there was a little girl with a bucked of soap and a home made bubble blower. I happened to have my camera with me and she was happy to have her picture taken.

bubbly

She said she’d made the soap herself, I do wonder what was in that bucket. When the giant bubble popped, the soap sat on the grass, almost like plastic wrap. It was so cool, I wish Ari had seen it!
