I love porn! Porn porn porn!

Posted by – 12/04/2009

And not the sex type porn, oh, no no no. Food porn. Seriously. I pour over 2 food porn round up websites daily, drooling over beautiful photos and tempting recipes. My favourite used to be tastespotting, but when they went offline due to a discrepancy over ownership, foodgawker was born and now I am a convert. The only reason I think I like foodgawker better is because they have a ‘next’ button and that makes reading it easier. I bookmark squillions of recipes with the idea that one day I will actually cook the oatmeal, soup, pasta, whatever one day. Riiiiight. I’ve said it before, I like the idea of cooking more than I like the actual act. If it didn’t involve cleaning up, I’d probably do it more often.

Anyway, now there’s a craft porn site, and I am SO excited. Holy crapadoodle, SO excited. I dig through Etsy sometimes, in search of craft inspiration, and now this, it opens up my crafting plans…infinitely. And I can submit my own things for people to enjoy (or not). Happy, happy day!

Thank you craftgawker! Thank you!

Computer tips from a non computer person

Posted by – 10/04/2009

I know, I’m the last person you’d expect computing help from, but I am here to tell you I learned about something that’s changed how I use the internets.

Two words: Google Reader. I think I first read about this via Dooce (or maybe linked from her blog) and I immediately followed all instructions and now I never miss anything on the blogs I read regularly.  It’s super simple, just plug in the blogs (or whatever) you read regularly and slide the Next button to your bookmarks bar and you’re done. Just click on that next button and it automatically zips to the entries you haven’t seen yet. Seriously, so easy.

Here is google reader settings, you click the goodies tab and you drag the “Next” button up to your bookmarks bar.  Then go here to paste in the blogs you want to stay up to date on (I am up to 12, so far). Done!

Oooh and reading this stuff over again I just added the handy dandy subscribe button (also under goodies) to my bookmark bar too for easy insta-subscribing! HA!

When I stay busy I forget…something…what were we talking about?

Gillian had posted an Etsy link in a comments thing about dollhouse miniature food and it’s so cute, I love it. Not that I have $35 for a teeny tiny cutting board with sandwich fixings on it-I wish. Anyway, I thought I’d post the miniature things I’ve been working on.

Um. I made warm hats for my 2 babies. It even seems funny to me, but it’s just something to do when I’m relaxing at night, watching tv. I can crochet at the same time!

I also made one a diaper. It was going to be pants, but it’s body is shaped strangely and hard to work around. Below them is the new bathmat. It needs to be blocked so it will lay flat. Those hats look so ridiculously funny to me. Even Shannon agreed that they were cute.

Ok, but in the real world: we went to the new space and put up all those stickers in Ari’s new room. I have to say they look amazing. Again, thank goodness she got these as a gift, otherwise I doubt we’d have done much at all.  I still need to hang the paper sun above everything, then the decorating here will be done.

Shannon had other work to do so I stuck around and cleaned up, vaccuuming (my worst chore in the world), organizing, tidying in general. I dragged furniture from point a to point b. I even created a little reading nook for little people to snug up on and read to themselves.

I also moved a counter top to where it belongs (that was easy, it’s on casters) and hung some storage things we brought from here. And I hung some paintings from the upper rail, just to see what it would look like and I think it looks great.

I swept and put the red rug from here under the coffee table. Then I met 2 of our new neighbours who signed me up to be on the tenant’s association. It’s funny that despite the fact we haven’t even moved in yet, it already seems like home to me.  I guess I mean it’s a step in the direction that I feel I’ve been steering towards for a long, long time.

South Park

I love South Park, I really do. And while I am not a regular viewer, I do occasionally try to catch up by watching episodes online. Tonight I watched a recent episode called “Eat, Pray, Queef”. It’s about women’s rights in an extremely abstract way, and I found it totally hilarious. Basically, this is the plot (with screen caps):

The boys of South Park are eagerly awaiting the new  Terrance and Phillip episode, (where they’ll find out who Phillip farted on to get out of prison). Instead they get Katie and Katherine Queef:

katie and katharine katie and katharine 2 katie and katharine 3

Unsurprisingly, the boys of South Park are disgusted by queefing. After a girl intentionally queefs on Butters (who runs home crying), the men and boys of South Park are spurred into going to the government to demand a ban on queefing. A still gravely traumatized Butters becomes their posterboy, we find out that while men naming their farts (the squeaker, the fog horn, the “don’t be scared”, the Chinese firecracker) is perfectly acceptable and normal, women naming their queefs (the sneezing unicorn, the resuscitator, the Road Warrior) is not. Queefing is banned in Colorado.

We also get to see Terrance and Phillip naked in between all of the excitement.

Anyway, Stan’s mom and sister are upset about the ruling, because it provesthat sexism still exists. The guys all realize their mistake and sing a song called “Queef Free” as an apology.

It’s funny. Trust me. South Park may have occasional misses, but for the most part, 13 seasons in and it’s still going strong, unlike the Simpsons (not funny for at least 5 years) or Family Guy (which was only funny for about 10 minutes).

I’ve noticed pigeons landing on other people’s balconies lots of times but never here until today. There were 2 but I wasn’t fast enough to catch them both. I wonder what they were up to.

Taken through the screen door and the sliding glass door.

My right hand and arm are sore from painting Ari’s new room. I don’t think I’ve spent as much time with a roller since my Stainless days. Ryan can relate. In my career there we moved twice (I started when they first opened at the basement version, east of Spadina Ave) and painted…lord, we painted a lot. I have to say, Ryan and I are quite a team, I bet we could start up an interior painting company. Although, we’d probably end up killing each other.

Cozy and worm

Because I don’t really want to start major renovations on my dollhouse before we move to the big space, I’ve been making little things just to feel like I am making progress. I had a few balls of self-striping sock yarn laying around and I’ve started making them into afghans for the dollhouse.

bankies

It’s hard to guess the correct size, but with afghans, I think it doesn’t matter too much. I’ve also been considering making tiny sweaters.

I’ve also been occupying my commute time by making more acorns. When I got home last night I figured, oh, there’s probably 6, maybe 8. No. There were19. So, maybe I ought to start thinking about what I am going to do with them.

Minutiae

Every day on my way out of our building I look at this pile of sticks and laugh.

woof woof

Funny huh? Maybe not, but I picture dog owners saying “Ok Fido, gimme your stick and we’ll come and get it later” and the dog reluctantly handing it over. Although my dog theory could be wrong, yesterday there was a squirrel wrestling with a stick near by.

In other news, I finally got a nice purse. Probably my first nice purse, so, in 20+ years of owning purses that cost in the $20 range, this one cost…more than that. Not hugely-I found it 50% off, but it’s hella cheaper than the one I had my eye on a couple months ago. It’s by Hedgren and I got it at Trove, a store that’s quickly becoming my favourite place to shop-if only they’d get rid of their stock of Ed Hardy junk.

black bag

I actually took that picture. Me. Anyway, it’s not too big, not too small, has enough pockets to keep stuff organized and it’s somewhat classic looking. And after years of carrying goofy junk bags (although if I could find another Bratz camo purse like I used to have…) I feel like I am finally entering the world of adults.

Nice.
