I feel sorry for the people who just want to get clothes that aren't revolting for a decent price. That seems an impossibility.

Even when I worked there I felt many things were over priced, and it's a real problem. Pricing is hard work, it's basically impossible to know every label in the world and it's new, retail value, but making everything $7.99 is just laziness.

And really? Tommy Hilfiger? Does ANYONE wear that any more?

I'm so happy you said something about how insane Value Village has become. It's really unfortunate. It immediately made me think of the low-income parents who shop there because their kids are nagging them for brand-name clothes. We all know its not good to be materialistic like this, but these kids just want to be like their friends, and Value Village used to make that a little easier. A few months ago I found a used Tommy Hilfiger long sleeved shirt for THIRTY DOLLARS. Unbelievable.

The yellow dress was gone the next day. Shows what I know about fashion. Ditto the red sheets.

I do forgive you, and I never doubted your character. One problem that transsexuals face is that often we're defined by cross dressers or fetishist who very well might fit that image. Transsexuals strive to pass and blend in, cisgender people walk by us everyday not knowing.

Warm Regards,

Value Village is a place for people to donate their used stuff, clothes, furniture, toys, anything. It gets sorted through by the production staff and some gets priced for sale. Some gets ragged off, some is considered garbage. Lots of garbage. Rag offs get baled and sent to another place where it will get sorted further and maybe sent to third world situations. It's not a volunteer organization, but part of the profit does get donated to a variety of places, the one I worked at was for diabetes (I think) and the one here is for cerebral palsy. So, non-religious.

And they're all across Canada, Australia and America, but they're called Savers in other places. I think!

That's decent of you about the comment; I often say things unthinkingly and I really shouldn't. Good for you!

And what's a Value Village? Is it like our Oxfam shops?

Ok. Rachel. I got another message from someone who is upset about my trannie comment and I wound up talking to Shannon about it and I hope you will forgive me for being flippant about this situation. I really meant the comment in a humourous way, I had a picture of a man in my head, a man that kind of looks like Shannon, bearded and big and not really making any attempt beyond putting a dress over top of his regular clothes and...it's really inexcusable.

And the irony is that my mother works tirelessly for the lgbt community so I am very much aware of the difficulties and prejudices faced by trans people.

I offer a sincere apology and I will redact the comment from this blog entry.
