That the apps I use most are all blue. I really wonder why this is, why app makers all seem to love blue so much.
Yes, yes. First world problem, I know.
I got fabric in the mail today that I love love LOOOOVE!!! I also got fabric (AND a serger!!) from my beloved Libs and I LOVE that too. So exciting. Check this out:
Gosh, right? Where to begin?
The main fabric, the largest swath that everything else is sitting upon, that was from Libs, it’s 2.5 yards and it’s Anna Maria Horner and it’s decor weight (a little heavy) and it will be the back of my yellow quilt. GOSH! Look at it again, it’s so seriously beautiful. And goes perfectly with everything else. Yes, I’m dying over here.
The fan of yellows is what I got in the mail today (except the honey comb, that’s Tula Pink from the workroom), it’s mostly a fabric line called Hideaway (very available on etsy) and it’s all clocks and yodeling and alpine scenery. The yellow and white stripes is by Lecien and it’s nice but it might be a little dull with the rest of the yellows but I might still use it.
The purples, I was supposed to get one full yard of the smaller print but the woman that sold it to me realized after the fact that she’d run out so she sent what she had of it, half a yard, and another half yard of the larger print and I LOVE them too. SO pretty and that’s the binding of my yellow quilt, friends. You’re seeing it in it’s very earliest stages.
Other super exciting news: Libs is having a girl! The noise I keep making starts loudly, it’s like “EEEE!” and then continues for a few seconds and then more of the same and my eyes start watering because I am seriously so deliriously happy and excited. I will spoil this child, I promise everyone that. I wasn’t living in Toronto when her first kiddo was born so he got the shaft but not this time!
And to cap it all off, I think I broke my left foot (yes, foot this time, yay!) ring toe. I dinged it getting into the shower (in a truly wretched hangover state) and stood there making a less joyous eeee noise while the water warmed up. I couldn’t sit around and baby it because it was my mom’s 70th birthday party and I had to go go go. It turned nice and purple over the course of the day and it hurts like hell 24 hours later.
The birthday party was super fun. Her friends really like to hug everyone and each other and it’s all very loving and sweet. And a giant bowl of shrimp helped. And the gravlax. Gimme some of that any day.
No need to ramble on about how hot it was today, you felt it too, right? We don’t have AC here so I was forced out to buy a couple fans to keep air circulating. Lucky for me, I came across the prettiest irises I have ever seen. Most around here are variations on purple, some white, yellow and burgundy, but peach? Wow. Thank you!
Stunning. The smell of them will always remind me of coming home late at night when I was a teenager-there was a row of them along the front walkway on Wolseley Ave.
Of course poppies. You know how I feel about poppies-really good. They might be my favourite flowers of them all. This patch is around the corner and every year I mean to ask for a seed pod and every year I forget.
I’m glad no one picks them so everyone can enjoy them.
First, the bad news. Or wait, first the good news!
I went to my first Toronto Modern Quilt Guild meeting last Sunday and I had fun! It was so nice to meet other quilters of all different ages and backgrounds-all women though. I know male quilters exist, I’ve just never had the pleasure of meeting one. Anyway, the meeting went like this: we all introduced ourselves and the woman that heads it, Kaye, told us all about the Spring Quilt situation in Utah and showed us her show schwag of which I was pretty jealous. I’d LOVE to go to that show but it’s not open to the public, wah! Then everyone showed off their latest projects and we all oohed and aahed and it was very cool to see all kinds of talent and technique.
Then the challenge. We have all been given a Kona charm pack and we have to make a quilt (whatever size/shape) using it and ONE metre of any other fabric (but only one type of fabric, not a bunch of fqs) for the front and whatever binding and backing. Sounds good, right? Well…The charm pack has it’s charm, I guess, but it’s certainly not any colour scheme that I’d chose. It’s dull and earthy and I felt pretty nervous looking at it. SO much beige has never been in my possession. Eek. Ok, so I chose a fabric, it’s a book print by Victoria and Albert (on sale for $7 at the workroom!) and got to designing. I wanted the fabrics to go as far as possible, to make the biggest quilt I could and I also wanted to keep with the book shelf look-AND I like a simple pattern and here is my finished top:
So far so good. The problems have come with the actual quilting portion of the show. I pin basted and started sewing straight lines across (as the picture is, left to right) not in the ditch but above and below each ditch but something weird was happening: the top was getting all bunched and puckery at the end of each row, getting worse and worse and after 4 double rows (ACK!) I gave up and tore out the stitches and pins and blamed the backing fabric (which I got at Value Village and is kind of cheap feeling but pretty). Ok. So I picked a different backing fabric (green from Ikea, fabric I’ve used for quilting lots of times with no trouble) and the same thing is happening. And I promise I’ve used a lot more pins and I also hand basted with thread, all around the edge.
So what the hey? Why is this happening? Is the top not ironed properly? Should I try super steaming it and using spray starch to keep it orderly? Gah. I’m feeling so very frustrated.
Ok. That was the good news rudely interrupted by the bad news. Now in the other news, I’m plotting a purse using plank print fabric from Ikea. I just need to figure out the lining and get me some rope for the handles. I love this print!
Can’t hardly wait to have me a new summer handbag that doesn’t rip my dang hair out all the time!
Somehow, while cutting fabric, I managed to slice off a really big chunk of my finger. Off my left hand, does anyone see a running theme here? At first I thought I might need a stitch but as I ran it under cold water I realized there was nothing to stitch, just a gaping hole oozing blood.
A lot of blood.
Avert your eyes if this kind of thing makes you queasy.
This picture shows what I lost, including nail.
Kind of puts a damper on my all quilting weekend. I will resort to plan B, lots of Portal 2. Things could be worse.
There is no way that I am the only person in the world that hates itunes. I mean, come on. It’s insane. Don’t get me wrong, I love my iphone and ipad, I love them to DEATH, but I have to update them occasionally and that means itunes is my only choice. But guess what? It won’t install on this computer. I have tried over and over and it installs to a point and then…stops. Some weird error message and I want to throw this fucking laptop across the room. Seriously. I’m on at least the 12th attempt tonight but I’m giving up.
So, experts out there, what should I do? I’m worried about my phone, it hasn’t been updated in a long time. Like, a year. And I have a ton of This American Life episodes on it that I don’t want to lose. Other than that? Meh. Can I use Shannon’s itunes on his computer? I did once to update the OS on my ipad and things work nicely on it. But he uses it for his phone, will it mess things up if we…share itunes?
Also, random question, what is your definition of financially broke?
What a productive week I’ve had. I got my arm finished-that only took 1 year of procrastination-dealt with internet thievery and finished my new quilt top. Ooh, and I got a shower radio for $5.
Here’s the top, in situ:
It’s not finished, not even close. I need to make the back (which will be pieced with leftovers from the top plus whatever extra I need), quilt it, then the binding and a label on the back. So, I’m halfway there.
People have been super nice-it’s funny how the internet has this awful reputation for trolls, I guess they don’t read my blog-about all my work lately. I really appreciate positive comments and feedback, it does stoke the fire. I’ve also heard a lot of “I wish I could do that” type stuff. Honestly it’s not that hard. I was thinking about what advice I wish I’d had coming into quilting so I will share with you what I’ve learned.
1-it’s not cheap. You need decent scissors, rotary cutter, mats, rulers, iron and ironing board, pins, thread, fabric and a sewing machine. Fabric is crazy expensive. So far, on this project alone, I figure I’ve spent at least $100, and I still need to get batting and fabric for binding and the back, another $100 probably. It’s big, right now it measures approximately 80″ square, so that’s a lot of material, but still.
2-Space. Man, you need space to sew. I have a shit-ton of it here and I could still do with more. I’d love to have a project wall, like a giant pin board to tack fabric or blocks onto, to figure out how to arrange them. Yes, I can use the floor but more often than not it’s super dusty in the main room and no matter how well I sweep and mop, it’s dirty. I dread leaving this space for that very reason (although I am eagerly anticipating it for every other reason).
3-Energy and momentum. My problem is putting projects down. When I injured my hand in December it stopped me from finishing the 2 quilts that I’d started for my parents (both completely done now, last hand finishes just a couple days ago). Well, that was my excuse (legitimately!) but worse was that I’d lost the momentum on them. I’d finished the fun part, picking fabrics, cutting, piecing, organizing and sewing the tops, but the drudgery, the sandwich and pinning and quilting and binding, ugh. I basically sewed this green top completely yesterday, including cutting the green strips that go between each block. That took a couple coffees and Coke Zeros.
4. Practice. I’ve fiddled with my new sewing machine a lot so I’m pretty confident about how it works and what it can do. This quilt is my 6th project and I do feel like I’m starting to figure it all out. I’m certainly not an Outlier, I’m no where near 40, 000 hours, but practice makes perfect. For everything.
That’s all. I mean, I reserve the right to add to this list as I need to, but those are my basic tips.
Ok. And about internet thievery-that’s an exaggeration. Someone I used to be friends with took one of my recipes, changed it a bit and published it as her own. And by published I don’t mean on their blog, but in an actual newsletter that goes out to people who will think that it’s an original. Now, I know we’re not friends any longer, I can live with that, but giving credit where it’s due is only fair. Even if it’s just a small nothing credit (“I adapted this recipe from an old friend”), it’s still meaningful. Obviously it’s time for me to update my google reader subscription feed and dump her blog to avoid any further upsets (and forced, unpleasant contact). After 2 years, I know I should. But I guess I’ve been hopeful for some sort of reconciliation. And because I was there throughout her pregnancy and the first two years her kids were alive, I’m still interested in their growth and development. How very selfish of me.
It will be the centre block of my future quilt.
The pattern is by Anna Maria Horner (that’s a pdf file, fyi). It was hard, I mean, each square was so twonky, such a stupid shape, I had to trim trim trim to make them even vaguely square, then I zigged the heart on top, then trimmed some more. Then I ironed it onto some fusable stuff to make it stay. Ugh. Whatever, it will look amazing once everything is put together.
I’ll also hand embroider our initials on it.
Ya know? If I’d had any idea that sewing with someone’s retired boxer shorts would be so difficult, I might not have done it at all!
I returned to the Emergency room for a look-see and fresh bandages. I’d been dreading it, knowing how a big gooey wound can crust up. The doctor that removed it was good-firm but fair. He soaked it in sterile water to loosen things up and told me it was ok to swear if necessary. It was, a little. He thought it looked good, no infection, not too swollen. Then he had an RN bandage me up and that was when the shit hit the fan, that guy was rough and caused me more pain than the burn had caused ’til then. He kept pressing really hard, even when I asked him not to and eventually I screamed at him and burst into tears. Jackass. I hope the nice nurses are back Tuesday for visit #3.
Pictures, but after a break. Not that they’re NSFW, but they’re really horrific. At least to me.
Someone who lives in my building had fun Saturday night with their motorcycle. Or did something deeply regrettable, I’m not sure. What I do know is that loud revving could be easily heard and that the perfume of burnt rubber was in the air. At 1:30am.
Lucky us.
But check the damage done to the tire, it’s almost worn right through. The asphalt beneath is worn through and melted too.
Someone has a big weiner. You can tell.
I made another squid:
Albino rabbit eyes.
